With funding from the Bike Louisville program of Louisville Metro government, Bicycling for Louisville now offers three programs for adult bicyclists and motorists who want to improve traffic safety for themselves and others on the roads. All classes will be taught by League Cycling Instructors certified by League of American Bicyclists.
These free classes will take place across Louisville Metro, at times to suit varied schedules, throughout this spring. We will continue to add more class times and locations, so please check back for updates.
- Confident Cycling
Would you like to feel safer and more comfortable riding in motor vehicle traffic? If so, you will find this course especially helpful. This hands-on course is based on the Traffic Skills 101 (formerly Road 1) curriculum of the League of American Bicyclists. Confident Cycling offers information and skills for experienced as well as casual bicyclists. You will receive a Traffic Skills 101 graduation certificate for successfully completing Confident Cycling.
Audience: adult bicyclists, all experience levels. Open to students 16-18 years old with a parent or guardian present.
Duration: 10 hours, divided into two or four sessions
Bring: your bicycle (in good working order) and helmet. Wear clothing suitable for a short ride. - The course covers:
- basic bicycle selection and fitting
- helmet fitting and adjustment
- fixing flat tires
- inspecting a bicycle for safety
- traffic laws
- bicycle handling skills for everyday situations and emergencies
- riding safely on various types of streets and intersections
- avoiding common hazards and crash-causing mistakes

Do you feel confident and safe riding bicycle on streets with car traffic? If not, this class can help.
Audience: adult bicyclists, all experience levels. Open to students 16-18 years old with a parent or guardian present.
Duration: 2 hours
Bring: a helmet, optionally, for assistance in adjusting it. Hint: About 90% of the bicycle helmets that we see worn around Louisville need adjustment! You need not bring a bicycle.
Registration: Not required. Each class is limited to 30 participants.
Do you know the legal rights and responsibilities of bicyclists and motorists, or the driver and bicyclist mistakes that cause the most crashes? This 45-minute program will tell you, and help you avoid becoming a statistic.
Audience: Anyone over age 16.
Duration: 30-minute presentation plus question-and-answer period
Bring: nothing needed
